Tenerife the island

If you are looking for a quality holiday in the sunshine then Tenerife is for you. Blessed with year round sunshine Tenerife has been described as "the island of eternal spring", and with an average temperature of 27 degrees celsius it is easy to see why it is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. With a fantastic blend of sandy beaches, spectacular scenery and exciting nightlife it is no wonder that tourism and hospitality are Tenerife's largest industries.

Tenerife is the largest and most populous of the seven Canary Islands with a land area of 2,034.38 km² (785.47 mi2) and 906,854 inhabitants, 43% of the total population of the Canary Islands, making it the most populated island of Spain.

About five million tourists visit Tenerife each year, the most of any Canary Islands.

Tenerife hosts one of the world's largest carnivals and the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is attempting to become a World Heritage Site. Tenerife is serviced by two airports, Tenerife North Airport and Tenerife South Airport, and is the tourism and economic centre of the archipelago.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island, the city is capital of the autonomous community of Canary Islands (shared with Las Palmas), sharing governmental institutions such as Presidency and ministries. Between the 1833 territorial division of Spain and 1927 Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the sole capital of the Canary Islands, until in 1927 a decree ordered that the capital of the Canary Islands be shared, as it remains as at present.

Tenerife also has the highest elevation of Spain, a World Heritage Site that is the third largest volcano in the world from its base, El Teide. The island's capital contains the architectural symbol of the Canary Islands, the modern Auditorio de Tenerife.

Los Cristianos

Los Cristianos is a town in Spain with a population of approximately 19,000 (2009), situated on the south coast of the Canary Island of Tenerife. Located in the municipality of Arona between the cone of the mountain Chayofita and the greater mountain Guaza. The town centre is around the Los Cristianos bay, but is rapidly expanding inland with modern development. The town is a popular tourist resort and includes a ferry port.

Unlike its bustling neighbour, Playa de las Américas, this town has a history that predates the tourist boom of the 1970s and 1980s. For many years this holiday hub was a quiet fishing village and evidence of its humble origins can still be seen in the typical Canarian architecture of the older buildings.

Nowadays however, the town offers a holiday experience, with two golden sand beaches, a multitude of bars and restaurants and its year round sunny climate. There is a wealth of accommodation to suit all budgets, including hotels, self catering apartments and timeshare resorts. There are also a wealth of excursions focused around the town's busy port including dolphin and whale watching as well as game fishing trips and party cruises.

Playa de las Américas

Playa de las Américas is a purpose-built holiday resort in the northern part of the Municipality of Arona. It was built in the 1960s beside the town of Los Cristianos and stretching northward to the Costa Adeje. The resort area features bars, nightclubs, restaurants, attractions, and beaches, most of which are man-made with imported sand from Africa due to the darkness of the native volcanic sand. Playa de las Americas is a center of nightlife in Tenerife. Nightlife is spread around the resort and includes the Veronicas Strip, Starco Commercial Centre and the Patch. Its main road is Las Americas Avenue, full of expensive and cheap shops.

Veronicas Strip

It hosts bars and clubs over three floors in five buildings. Bars and clubs can be found in this area. It has a reputation of being very boisterous and can often be the subject of bad publicity due to fighting incidents, however recent regeneration and increased police presence has seen violence greatly reduced compared to the late 1990s. Bars in this popular area include O'Neils Bar, Bobby's Nightclub and Busby's bar.

Starco Commercial Center

The Starco center consists of 1 large building with multiple bars, clubs and fast food outlets over 3 floors. There are generally no entrance fees to any bar or club in this area and most don't have a dress code although bare chests are strictly forbidden. Bars are generally open until 3am with nightclubs open until around 6. The epicentre of the Starco Centre is Tramps Nightclub who host regular event nights with top named DJs gracing the decks throughout the summer. Other bars in this area include Linekers, Brannigans and the Met Bar.

Centroamericas Commercial Center (Commonly known as 'The Patch')

The patch offers complete family entertainment in a multi level commercial centre that is crammed with restaurants, bars and shops. Here you will find all your cabaret and karaoke bars and family entertainment taking you through until about 3am. Most bars here are children friendly and a lot will also serve food during the day and into the evening. There are numerous live music bars here with some form of singer or band as well as the typical drag queen cabaret shows that have become so popular with the British tourists. There is a smattering of dedicated restaurants here as well for a more formal meal as well as some good take away's if you want to eat on the move. The area surrounding the Patch has recently been pedestrianised and is perfectly safe for all ages.
